The Zack Wansley Memorial

We just learned from Maribeth and Ted Wansley that their 21 year-old-son Zack passed away on Sept. 13 while jogging in Cochran Mill Park. Zack was on a 20-mile training run through Rico and Cochran Mill Park in preparation for the Atlanta Thanksgiving Day Marathon. He collapsed at about the 18th mile from causes unknown.

According to Maribeth, Zack loved Cochran Mill Park. He grew up in the Park and that is where he started running. He ran cross country for Chapel Hill High School in Douglas County and for GA Tech during his freshman year. He had just stated his fourth year at GA Tech as a Civil Engineering major.

Zack was very enthusiastic about the effort to buy the park land – in fact he was saving to buy an acre of Cochran Mill Park. Zack’s friends have asked if they can make donations to the parks in lieu of sending flowers, and we thought others in the community might like to also. So we have set up a special donation category called the Zack Wansley Memorial.

If you would like to make a donation to the parks in honor of Zack Wansley, please make your check payable to:

Maribeth sent this following message:

On a personal note, the CHC police and Larry Parrott could not have been more supportive in looking for Zack Saturday morning and in the care and compassion shown to us. We would like to thank everyone involved in the Public Safety office for their help during this horrific experience.

Laurie wrote: For those of you who do not know this wonderful family, Maribeth and Ted Wansley have been a part of our community for a long time. They have served as volunteers for the Cochran Mill Nature Center since it formed. I recall the “Trail Trot” running event they used to organize at the Center, which was a labor of love. I ran that small race for many years and always looked forward to winning one of the hand-crafted bird houses or other gifts they provided. There always seemed to be enough prizes to go around for everyone – even for us poky runners. Maribeth now serves as executive director of the Cochran Mill Nature Center and she is also our district board member for Greystone Power. Ted is also active in the community and has served on many parks committees.
